Wealth, Prosperity and Abundance

In our western society, and basically globally now, we seem to base life virtually exclusively on the material level of existance. We gauge and measure our worth and scale our progress on the evidence of what we have been able to 'achieve' in life. The car we drive, the phone we casually and more than often strategically show, the accolades we have gathered up and so on, all add up to form our inner picture of who and what we are.

I personally have a banking app in my 'smart phone' that has a tab - My Net Worth. The subtle, driving implication here is that my intrinsic value and worth as a human, as a person is linked inextricably with the figures estimated and dished up to me here. I wonder how many folk frantically check this tab daily. Perhaps it's a cause of anxiety and worry late into the night for some? This is likely not an exageration but an example of the way big business and corporations are steering average people into certain behavioural channels and forms of thought and feelings. Google, Microsoft and others are actually just megalithic businesses at the end of the day with the motives and concerns of common corporations staying competitive in a deadly knife wielding environment.

There is nothing wrong with wealth, abundance and prosperity. However there is a lot wrong with flagrant disregard for the inter-connectedness and inter-relationship of life on macro and micro scales.

Life is a give and take balance of processes. When one party dominates on the take side because of basic greed and monopolisation, it simply means that others lose and may even fall completely. To date we have all simply excepted this as the way life is.

New science is now telling us that the old idea of life in nature as being 'competitive' is actually wrong. It looks that way at first glance since we see everything hunting and 'eating' others. The new evidence points to a fine, self-balancing system of collaboration. Interestingly, the number of accounts, images and videos now appearing of 'arch-enemy' predators 'helping' each other is amazing. For example a leopard helping a deer in a difficult situation, an eagle 'rescuing' a chicken and so on. Many humans have a way to go before this attitude of co-assistance is seen more in our world.

The bottom line is really found in a few simple questions. Is buying a more expensive car (that we don't actually need) really important? What reason does it serve? Ditto the newest model phone, designer clothing, more expensive house and so on.

Bringing out new models of cars and phones and devices and just about everything else too, is a  well proven business strategy. Imagine how strange it would be if new model phones etc were only made sporadically, once truely meaningful improvements had been made. Do we actually need many of the 'advances' that we see so much made of? - business strategy again.

Are we just becoming the slaves of giant corporations and social media platforms telling us when to jump (and pay them), how to jump (and pay them) and on and on and on. . .

So again, nothing wrong with abundance and prosperity. Yet perhaps balance and equilibrium and taking into account inter-relationship and inter-dependance is more imporatnt than a cut-throat race to see who can inflate there material gains fastest. Keeping up with the Jones and so on.

Bear in mind that it is us who form the market for the business entities to sell to. When enough people say 'no thanks' or boycott in some way, the giant multi-national company is hamstrung and literally has no further power.

Perhaps we should re-think all this and give ourselves more power and credit for taking up the responsibility to begin 'changing the world' - for the better. How would that 'better' look?
